Hollywood Studios Lost Its Coaster for the Whole Day

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster never really got going on Tuesday. After a false start that opened around 9:37 AM, the coaster shut down and stayed offline through park close — roughly fourteen hours where one of the Studios’ two headliner thrill rides simply wasn’t an option. That’s the single most consequential thing that happened to a Disney guest on September 8, and it shaped how the afternoon played out on the west side of property. Everything else was a fairly typical post-Labor-Day Tuesday: Magic Kingdom running deliberately light for its Halloween party, EPCOT quietly busier than usual thanks to Food & Wine.

Magic Kingdom sat at a 1/10 with an 8.9-minute median — two full levels under its own 30-day norm, and no mystery why. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party closed the park to day guests at 6:00 PM, so fewer people bought Tuesday tickets in the first place. The peak didn’t arrive until 5:00 PM (a whopping 15-minute median), which is really just the last hour of day-guest touring before the changeover. Space Mountain at 10 minutes and Buzz at 20 tell the whole story: you could have walked onto nearly anything. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train’s evening breakdown (6:30–7:32 PM) landed right at the party transition, so day guests mostly dodged it.

EPCOT was the busier-than-normal park, landing a 4/10 against a usual 3. Food & Wine is doing exactly what festivals do — filling the walkways. The tell is in the attractions guests use as air-conditioned breathers: Living with the Land and The Seas with Nemo & Friends both ran 15 minutes, triple their usual five. Gran Fiesta doubled to 10. Those aren’t rides people are rushing — they’re rides people are ducking into between food booths in 88-degree heat. The 8:00 AM peak (25-minute median) reflects early-entry guests hitting Frozen and Remy before the crowds thickened.

Over at Hollywood Studios, the 35.5-minute median (a 5/10) held right at baseline, but that number is a little generous to the guest experience given Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster was dark all day. Demand that would have spread across two coasters concentrated elsewhere, and the 1:00 PM peak hit 50 minutes. Rise of the Resistance and Slinky both added their own evening hiccups on top of it.

Animal Kingdom was the calmest relative to itself — a 2/10, slightly below its norm, with a 17-minute median. The noon peak (35 minutes) is the usual midday Pandora-and-Everest crush before the heat thins the park out. Comfortable touring all afternoon.

Downtime Report

Beyond the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster outage, EPCOT took the brunt of the mechanical trouble. Test Track was down from 4:01 PM through the evening, and Journey of Water closed twice across the afternoon — a rough stretch for anyone building a World Nature loop. At Magic Kingdom, Magic Carpets of Aladdin and Kali River Rapids (Animal Kingdom) both closed at 4:45 PM and never reopened, though Kali’s low draw in the day’s heat softened the blow. None of this rose to a park-wide event; it was a normal spread of individual incidents, just an unusually long one at the Studios’ front gate.

Today’s Forecast — Wednesday, September 9

Our engine calls Magic Kingdom a 5/10 (21-minute median) — the busiest park today and the one to avoid now that the party pressure has lifted and it’s back to a normal operating day with early entry. EPCOT is the best play at a 2/10 (25 minutes), even with Food & Wine running; the festival adds foot traffic, not queue demand, so the rides stay walkable. Hollywood Studios lands a 3/10 (32 minutes) and Animal Kingdom a 3/10 (21 minutes), both comfortable.

Honesty check on yesterday’s engine: it nailed Magic Kingdom (1/10, dead on) and came within a minute on EPCOT, but it missed on the other two — it underestimated Hollywood Studios by two levels and overestimated Animal Kingdom by three, calling it the avoid park when it was actually the quietest. So take today’s Studios and Animal Kingdom numbers with a grain of salt. Weather is a non-factor this morning — mostly clear, upper 80s by midday — with only an 18% afternoon storm chance. If you want a Magic Kingdom day, rope-drop with early entry; otherwise, EPCOT is your walk-on morning.
