Animal Kingdom Ran Nearly Empty Wednesday — Half Its Normal Wait, and Safaris Were Basically Walk-On

Animal Kingdom posted a 10.4-minute median on Wednesday, down roughly half from its own 30-day baseline and landing at a 1/10. That is two full crowd levels below where this park usually sits, and it is the one number on the board that genuinely stands out. Everywhere else, the resort behaved itself: Hollywood Studios and EPCOT held close to normal, and Magic Kingdom drifted light. If you had an Animal Kingdom reservation, you walked onto almost everything.

Weather was not the reason. Wednesday was mostly clear, a high near 83 and no measurable rain — ideal touring conditions that should have supported crowds, not thinned them. This was simply a quiet midweek day at the park that tends to clear out earliest, and guests who showed up reaped the reward.

Park by park

Start with the standout. Kilimanjaro Safaris, normally a 35-minute commitment, averaged 10 minutes — a 71% drop. That is the clearest signal of how thin the park ran, because the safari is usually the one attraction that holds a line regardless. Animal Kingdom’s peak came early, at 9:00 AM, and faded from there; by late morning the park was coasting. Kali River Rapids sat at 5 minutes, but with highs in the low 80s that is expected water-ride behavior, not a surprise — plenty of guests still skip the soak.

Hollywood Studios was the busiest of the four and essentially on-script, a 4/10 with a 34-minute median and a 1:00 PM peak near 45 minutes. The pocket of real demand was Tower of Terror, which ran a 60-minute average — about 71% above its own norm — and that number is partly explained by the drop ride losing more than an hour to a 4:13 PM breakdown, which pushed its standby line up as capacity disappeared mid-afternoon.

EPCOT held at its Food & Wine rhythm: a 1/10 by the numbers with a 15-minute median, peaking at 10:00 AM before the festival crowd shifted its attention to the booths. Living with the Land and Spaceship Earth both sat at 5 minutes, the familiar pattern of guests treating attractions as filler between World Showcase stops. Magic Kingdom ran light all day — an 11-minute median, down about a quarter from baseline — with its modest peak at 11:00 AM. Pirates, Dumbo, Barnstormer, Speedway and small world all hovered at walk-on, which is exactly what a quiet Wednesday there looks like.

Downtime report

EPCOT took the worst of it. Test Track went down twice — a late-morning stretch and again from 6:10 PM to past 8:00 PM — which is a brutal pair of windows for a headliner, bookending the day’s best touring hours. Frozen Ever After was offline for over an hour mid-morning, and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure stumbled twice before lunch. For a festival crowd that already treats rides as secondary, the hit was softened, but anyone chasing EPCOT’s marquee attractions had a frustrating morning. Over at Magic Kingdom, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure lost 95 minutes starting at 9:01 AM and Big Thunder sat idle for over an hour late morning — though with the park this empty, overflow demand had plenty of room to land elsewhere. Animal Kingdom’s only notable gap was Expedition Everest, down a half hour in the early evening.

Today’s forecast

First, the honesty: yesterday’s engine badly missed Magic Kingdom, calling an 8/10 against an actual 2/10 — off by six levels — and also undershot Hollywood Studios. It nailed Animal Kingdom. Not our finest scorecard, and worth owning.

For today, Thursday, the engine calls Hollywood Studios the park to avoid at a 4/10 (about 36 minutes), with EPCOT close behind at 4/10 (27 minutes). Animal Kingdom lands at 2/10 (20 minutes), and Magic Kingdom is the best bet at just 1/10 (15 minutes). Here is the catch that makes Magic Kingdom’s low number real: it closes early tonight for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, so day guests thin out and the park runs quiet right up until the 6:00 PM cutoff. Tour MK hard in the morning and midday, then hop. EPCOT’s festival keeps adding bodies, and it is also Wine & Dine Half Marathon weekend, so expect evening energy across the resort. Skies are clear again with a high near 78. The play: rope-drop Magic Kingdom, save Hollywood Studios for late.
