A Genuinely Empty Thursday — and Slinky Dog Dash Sat Out the Whole Day

Animal Kingdom posted a 7-minute median wait on Thursday, September 3. Not a headliner — the whole park. That’s a 1/10, roughly two full crowd levels below where Animal Kingdom normally sits, and it set the tone for a day when all four parks ran light and quiet. If you were in the parks yesterday, you walked onto almost everything. Avatar Flight of Passage, a ride that routinely posts 50-minute lines, was sitting at 20. This is what a true off-week looks like, and Disney’s “Good-To-Go Day” designation — a signal they expect thin local-passholder crowds — landed exactly as advertised.

The weather did nothing to help fill the parks: 85 degrees, mostly cloudy, muggy at 88% humidity, with a quarter-inch of rain that briefly closed a few outdoor rides midafternoon. But the emptiness was structural, not weather-driven. Early September, post-Labor-Day-buildup lull, no school breaks in the feeder markets — this is the calendar working against attendance.

Park by Park

Animal Kingdom is the standout. At a 1/10 with a 7-minute median, it ran two levels under its own norm, and the Pandora headliners tell the story: Flight of Passage at 20 minutes, Na’vi River Journey at 15. Expedition Everest was a 5-minute walk-on. Kali River Rapids sat at 10 — partly the off-crowd, partly that nobody wants to get soaked when it’s already humid. The noon peak barely registered at a 10-minute median.

Hollywood Studios also ran two levels below normal, landing at a 2/10 with a 20.7-minute median — down more than 40% from its 30-day average. The catch is that number is depressed by its own headliner being gone all day (more below). Even with the noon peak hitting 35 minutes, Studios was the most walkable it gets.

Magic Kingdom held at an 11.7-minute median, a 2/10, with the day topping out around 11 AM at just 15 minutes. The only things resembling lines were the Fantasyland spinners — Dumbo, the Magic Carpets of Aladdin, and the Barnstormer all doubled to 10 minutes, which says more about how empty everything else was than about any real demand. Space Mountain at 15 minutes was half its usual wait.

EPCOT was the “busiest” park and still only a 1/10 at a flat 15-minute median, right on its baseline. Food & Wine Festival is running, and the pattern held true to form: guests came for booths, not queues. The 8 AM peak reflects early-entry resort guests hitting Guardians and Test Track before the festival crowds spread out to eat and drink. Spaceship Earth was a 5-minute walk-on most of the day.

Downtime Report

Slinky Dog Dash never opened. It was listed down from 9 AM straight through to 9:05 PM — the entire operating day. For a park where Slinky is the reason people rope-drop Toy Story Land, that’s a real loss, and it’s a big reason Studios’ median looks so soft. This is now the fourth day this stretch that Slinky has swallowed most or all of its schedule, so regulars aren’t surprised anymore, but it still stings.

Elsewhere, Astro Orbiter was offline more than six hours at Magic Kingdom, and Test Track went down twice at EPCOT — a nearly three-hour afternoon closure plus another 74 minutes in the evening. A brief drizzle between 1:11 and 1:49 PM triggered weather-protocol closures across four outdoor Magic Kingdom attractions, including both Railroad stations, Jungle Cruise, and Dumbo. On a normal day those closures would sting; yesterday, with walk-on waits everywhere, guests simply drifted indoors and barely noticed.

Today’s Forecast — Friday, September 4

The engine expects a slightly busier but still very manageable day. EPCOT leads at a 4/10 (about a 27-minute median), pushed up by the festival and early entry — it’s the park to be strategic about. Hollywood Studios comes in at a 3/10 (33 min), Animal Kingdom a 3/10 (22 min), and Magic Kingdom the calmest at a 2/10 (17 min). Magic Kingdom is your best bet today — but note it closes early to day guests for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, so tour it in the morning and early afternoon. EPCOT is the one to avoid if you want short lines.

Honesty check: yesterday’s engine forecast badly overshot Magic Kingdom, calling a 6/10 that came in at a 2. It nailed Hollywood Studios and correctly flagged the avoid-park, but the model leaned too heavy on a Labor-Day-weekend buildup that hasn’t materialized yet. Take today’s numbers as a soft ceiling — if anything, expect the lighter end.

With a 90-degree high and only scattered afternoon clouds, hydrate and plan an indoor midday break. Rope-drop the headliner you care about most; you’ll have the run of the place before lunch.
