Slinky Dog Dash Missed Almost the Entire Day — On a Monday Nothing Else Was Crowded Anyway

Toy Story Land’s headliner never really got going on Monday, August 31. Slinky Dog Dash logged a downtime that started at 8:31 AM and stretched all the way to 9:01 PM — better than twelve hours off the board. On a busy day that would be a genuine crisis. On this Monday, with all four parks parked in the low-percentile basement, it was more of a shrug: guests who wanted Slinky just walked onto everything else instead. Hollywood Studios posted a 15.8-minute median, roughly half its 30-day norm, landing at the bottom of its own scale.

The backdrop here is a soft late-summer Monday paired with a “Good-To-Go Day,” Disney’s own signal that they expected thin attendance and were nudging local pass holders to come play. They were right. Weather stayed mostly clear with a high near 88, aside from a brief afternoon shower we’ll get to.

How the parks actually played

Hollywood Studios is the one that moved furthest from its usual footing — three full crowd levels below its typical 4/10. With Slinky offline, you’d expect neighboring rides to soak up demand, but they didn’t need to. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster took its own afternoon break (3:24 to 5:49 PM), and even the marquee attractions ran soft: Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway sat around 20 minutes, Tower of Terror near 13, and Millennium Falcon at 15. The 11 AM peak of 25 minutes was as heavy as it got, and it faded fast.

Magic Kingdom was the quietest headliner story — an 8.8-minute median, well under half its norm, at a 2/10 against its own baseline. Space Mountain at 10 minutes and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at 10 are numbers you almost never see; on a warm day, low Tiana waits partly reflect guests who don’t feel like getting soaked, but even the dry rides were walk-ons. The park’s peak was a gentle 15-minute median at noon.

Animal Kingdom quietly ran the lightest of anyone relative to itself, down to an 8.3-minute median. Expedition Everest at 10 minutes and Na’vi River Journey at 15 tell the story — this was a stroll-on morning, peaking early at 10 AM before the afternoon heat and a passing shower thinned things further.

EPCOT was the lone park that held its normal shape, sitting right at its 15-minute baseline with Food & Wine in full swing. Festival crowds cluster around booths, not queues, which is why waits stayed flat. The one oddity: Living with the Land climbed to a 15-minute average, triple its usual, as guests used the slow indoor boat ride as air-conditioned downtime between sips.

Beyond Slinky’s day-long absence, a couple of closures actually mattered. Test Track was down more than three hours in the afternoon (1:54 to 5:22 PM), pulling a chunk of EPCOT’s thrill demand out of circulation right through the warmest stretch. At Magic Kingdom, The Hall of Presidents sat idle from 5:19 to 8:01 PM, and Winnie the Pooh had a rough day with three separate stretches offline.

The afternoon shower was its own small event: between roughly 2:27 and 3:10 PM, a rain band triggered weather-protocol closures across four outdoor attractions at Magic Kingdom — Astro Orbiter, Jungle Cruise, and both Walt Disney World Railroad stations. These weren’t mechanical failures; they came back together once the band passed, and with waits already near walk-on levels, indoor rides barely felt the shift.

Today’s outlook — Tuesday, September 1

First, an honest scorecard: yesterday’s engine badly overcooked Magic Kingdom, calling a 6/10 that came in at a 1. It nailed the best-park pick but whiffed on the level by five. Lesson logged.

For today, the engine sees more of the same quiet, with one twist. Magic Kingdom is the best call at a 1/10, about a 16-minute wait — but note that MK closes early to day guests tonight for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Get there at rope drop, ride hard through early afternoon, and clear out before the party crowd enters at 4 PM. Animal Kingdom is the day’s busiest at a 2/10 (~20 min) and the one to save for later. Hollywood Studios sits at 1/10 (~29 min) and EPCOT at 1/10 (~24 min), where Food & Wine adds foot traffic but not queue pressure. Watch for afternoon rain again, with a 30% chance and a high near 87.
