Hollywood Studios Ran Three Levels Hot on a Saturday Its Big Rides Kept Stumbling

Hollywood Studios spent Saturday, September 19 sitting three levels above its own normal — a 6/10 day against a park that usually idles around a 3 — and it did that while its marquee attractions kept dropping offline. Median waits hit 38 minutes, up better than a quarter over the trailing month, and the 2:00 PM peak pushed the middle of the pack to a full 50 minutes. For a park where a typical day means walk-ons before lunch, that’s a real change in how the afternoon felt on the ground.

Weather wasn’t the driver. It was a warm, mostly clear day — high of 87, a brief bit of moisture that added up to a quarter-inch and never disrupted touring. This was a Saturday-in-festival-season surge, plain and simple, with Food & Wine pulling weekend guests across the resort.

Where the pressure landed

At Hollywood Studios the demand and the downtime collided all day. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster went down twice — late morning and again mid-afternoon — and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway did the same, opening the morning with a closure and repeating it before noon. Rise of the Resistance lost the better part of an hour early, and Toy Story Mania closed for 90 minutes starting at 1:40 PM, right as the park hit its heaviest stretch. With that many headliners flickering in and out, the guests who stayed piled onto whatever was running, which is a big part of why the standby numbers climbed so far above baseline.

EPCOT was the day’s other standout, also running a 6/10 against its usual 3. Waits landed near 21 minutes, and the peak came unusually early — 10:00 AM, with the median hitting 30 minutes before most parks had warmed up. That early spike tracks with rope-drop crowds hitting the rides before drifting toward the festival booths. It didn’t help that the ride roster kept thinning: Test Track was down for over three hours in the morning, came back, then closed again for two more in the afternoon. Spaceship Earth lost nearly two and a half hours in the evening, and Figment, Nemo, and Remy all took extended breaks. Living with the Land climbed to 25 minutes — guests treating it as a shaded, seated break between food stops.

Animal Kingdom quietly ran two levels above its own norm, waits up sharply to 26 minutes with a noon peak. Kilimanjaro Safaris drove much of that, sitting at 40 minutes as guests chased the cooler-morning animal activity. It’s still comfortable touring by Animal Kingdom standards, but the jump signals weekend overflow finding its way there.

Magic Kingdom was the calm one relative to itself — a 5/10, only modestly above its normal. Fantasyland showed the crowding, though: Under the Sea ran 25 minutes against a typical 5, and Dumbo, Mad Tea Party, and the Barnstormer all ran triple their usual. Families were clustering in the kids’ corner while the rest of the park moved fine.

The downtime toll

EPCOT guests felt it worst. Losing Test Track for a combined five-plus hours across two windows meant one of the park’s top draws was a coin flip most of the day, and the evening Spaceship Earth closure took out a reliable people-eater right at dinner hour. Over at Hollywood Studios, the Toy Story Mania closure landing on the 2:00 PM peak sent its neighbors’ lines up when guests had the fewest alternatives. If you were touring either park Saturday, a flexible plan beat a fixed one.

Today’s outlook: Sunday, September 20

Straight talk first — yesterday’s engine forecast underestimated across the board. It called EPCOT a 5 and got an 8, missed Magic Kingdom by two, and only nailed Animal Kingdom. Festival Saturdays are running hotter than the model expected. Keep that in mind reading today’s numbers.

Today the engine calls Magic Kingdom the best play at a 1/10, around 15-minute waits — but that’s because Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes over and the park closes early to day guests. If you’re not holding a party ticket, you get a genuinely light morning and early afternoon before it clears out; go early and go hard. Animal Kingdom is the one to avoid at a 6/10 (26 min), with EPCOT at 5/10 (29 min) as Food & Wine keeps pulling weekenders, and Hollywood Studios easing to a 4/10 (36 min). Note Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the Railroad are closed at MK. Warm again — mid-80s, low rain odds — so plan around demand, not weather.
