The Halloween Party Redrew the Whole Resort on Friday

One event bent three of the four parks off their own normal levels on Friday, September 18. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party pulled Magic Kingdom down to a 1/10 — its quietest register — while the guests who would have filled it landed at EPCOT and Hollywood Studios instead. EPCOT ran three levels above its own baseline, Studios two levels above, and Magic Kingdom two below. If you toured by the numbers, the strategy was simple: the party park was practically empty by lunch, and everywhere else paid for it.

Weather stayed a non-factor for once — 87 degrees, partly cloudy, with a brief afternoon shower that mattered more for closures than comfort.

EPCOT carried the weight

EPCOT was the standout mover, sitting at a 6/10 with a 20-minute median against a 15-minute baseline. Food & Wine is running, and while festival crowds usually chase booths over queues, Friday’s displaced Magic Kingdom guests clearly went looking for rides. The early peak tells the story — waits topped out at 10 AM with a 30-minute median, meaning the park front-loaded hard before the food crowd took over. Spaceship Earth climbed to 25 minutes, well above its usual 10, and it did that despite spending the entire morning offline (more on that below). Soarin’ held at 35. Even the deep cuts felt it: Journey Into Imagination, Nemo, and Gran Fiesta all ran at double their typical waits — the kind of numbers you only see when a park is genuinely full, not just festival-busy.

Hollywood Studios absorbed the rest, landing at a 7/10 with a 38-minute median and a noon peak that hit 50. That’s a heavy day for Studios, and the afternoon didn’t cooperate. Animal Kingdom quietly ran hot too, up 60% over its 30-day average to a 24-minute median. Kilimanjaro Safaris drew 35 minutes and even the Wildlife Express Train — usually a walk-on — held at 15. It’s still comfortable touring at Animal Kingdom, but the spike shows guests spreading out to dodge the party park.

Magic Kingdom, by contrast, was the place to be. An 8.8-minute median is barely a wait at all. Space Mountain sat at 10 minutes, half its norm. If you had a day ticket and didn’t mind the 6 PM close, Friday was a gift.

A rough day for EPCOT’s headliners

EPCOT took the brunt of the downtime. Test Track was the big one — down nearly three hours from 5:26 PM into the evening after an earlier hour-long stoppage, gutting the back half of the day for anyone who saved it for last. Spaceship Earth lost its entire morning, offline from 9:36 AM to past noon, which makes that 25-minute afternoon wait even more telling: demand simply stacked up and waited. Remy’s added another 96-minute gap over lunch.

Elsewhere, Pirates of the Caribbean sat idle for over two hours in Magic Kingdom’s morning, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train lost two hours of prime afternoon. A brief rain band between 1:46 and 2:17 PM triggered weather-protocol closures on three outdoor attractions — Journey of Water, Slinky Dog Dash, and Kali River Rapids — but all reopened within the half hour. That was a passing shower, not a day-wrecker.

Today’s outlook: Saturday, September 19

Our engine calls for a busier, more even Saturday now that the party crowd redistribution eases. Here’s the read:

• Hollywood Studios — 6/10, ~40 min. The busiest park today. Early entry is live for resort guests, so rope-drop Rise or Slinky before the wall arrives. This is the one to avoid if you want breathing room.
• Magic Kingdom — 6/10, ~22 min. A full rebound from Friday’s party lull — no early close today means it climbs back to a normal Saturday. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the Railroad remain closed.
• EPCOT — 5/10, ~29 min. Food & Wine keeps it moderately busy. Hit headliners early, then let the booths carry your afternoon.
• Animal Kingdom — 5/10, ~25 min. The best play today. An 86-degree high, but it’s the calmest of the four — start here or save it for a lighter afternoon.

Honest scorecard: Friday’s forecast nailed Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom but underestimated the party’s spillover — we called EPCOT a 4 (it hit 6) and Studios a 4 (it hit 7). Party redistribution runs stronger than the model expects. Worth factoring in if you’re deciding between the two today.
