Slinky Dog Dash Sat Out Most of Saturday While Hollywood Studios Ran at a 9/10

Hollywood Studios had its best-in-class attraction offline before the ropes even dropped, and it never fully recovered. Slinky Dog Dash went down at 9:00 AM and stayed down until 2:55 PM — nearly six hours, straddling the entire morning and lunch rush. On a day when the park posted a 46.8-minute median and landed at a 9/10, losing the land’s people-eater turned an already heavy day into a genuine grind. If you were there Saturday, September 26, you felt it.

Weather wasn’t the culprit. Skies were clear, the high touched 84 degrees, and there wasn’t a drop of rain all day. This was pure demand meeting broken hardware.

Park by Park

Hollywood Studios is the story. That 46.8-minute median runs more than half again above the park’s 30-day norm, and against its own usual rhythm this was a six-level jump — the kind of reading the park sees only a handful of times a year. Peak hit at noon with a 70-minute median, right in the window when Slinky was dark and guests were funneling toward everything else. Rise of the Resistance had a rough morning too, cycling down three separate times before 11 AM, which meant two of the park’s marquee draws were unreliable exactly when the crowd was thickest. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror each took morning hits as well. For a park already stretched, the timing couldn’t have been worse.

Animal Kingdom deserves the number-two slot. A 25.9-minute median is well above its typical quiet-park baseline — busier than roughly three-quarters of its past year — with the peak landing at 1:00 PM around 45 minutes. Nothing broke in a headline way; this was simply a genuinely busy Saturday across the board.

EPCOT sat at a 20-minute median, a third above its norm, with Food & Wine doing its usual work of packing walkways more than queues. Frozen Ever After was the pain point — down twice, first for 100 minutes in the early afternoon and again for 70 minutes in the evening, pinching World Showcase’s most-wanted ride during prime touring hours. Remy’s and Test Track each took shorter afternoon breaks. Figment ran a 20-minute wait, quadruple its usual five, a reliable sign that guests were grabbing indoor, low-stress rides between food booths.

Magic Kingdom was the quiet overachiever, if you can call a 9/10 quiet. The 17.5-minute median only runs modestly above its norm, but the crowd distribution was unusual: the park didn’t peak until 5:00 PM, when the median hit 30 minutes. The Fantasyland spinners tell the tale. Under the Sea ran a 28-minute average against a typical five — a startling bottleneck for a continuous-load ride — while it’s a small world, Dumbo, the carrousel, and the PeopleMover all ran three to four times their normal waits. When the family-ride tier clogs like that, it means the park was simply full of families all day.

Downtime Report

The Slinky Dog Dash closure is the one that reshaped a park. With Toy Story Land’s headliner unavailable through lunch, guests spilled onto everything nearby, and Hollywood Studios’ noon peak of 70 minutes is partly that displaced demand looking for somewhere to go. Rise of the Resistance compounded it with a stuttering morning — three closures inside three hours before finally stabilizing. Over at EPCOT, Frozen Ever After’s double outage cost guests roughly three hours of availability on the park’s hardest-to-book attraction, pushing more traffic toward Remy’s and the World Showcase pavilions during the festival crush.

Today’s Forecast — Sunday, September 27

Today the map flips because of the calendar, not the crowds. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes over Magic Kingdom tonight, so the park closes early to day guests — the engine calls it a 1/10 with a 16-minute median. That makes MK the best value of the day if you tour in the morning and clear out before the party crowd arrives. Note that Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is down for refurbishment, so plan around it.

Hollywood Studios is the one to avoid: a 7/10 at a 41-minute median, coming off yesterday’s 47. EPCOT lands at a 6/10 (30 minutes) with Food & Wine still running, and Animal Kingdom matches at a 6/10 (27 minutes). Weather is a non-factor — mostly cloudy, low 80s, no rain. Rope-drop the studios if you must go there; otherwise, take the party-day trade and enjoy a genuinely light Magic Kingdom morning.

A note on honesty: yesterday’s engine badly undercalled Magic Kingdom, predicting a 6/10 when it hit a 9. It nailed EPCOT and Animal Kingdom and was within a level on Hollywood Studios, but the MK miss was real. We’re watching that.
