Animal Kingdom Was the Park to Watch on Sunday — Not the Halloween-Emptied Magic Kingdom

Animal Kingdom ran hot on Sunday, September 27. Its median wait landed at 21.3 minutes — about 42% above the park’s own 30-day baseline — pushing it into an 8/10 reading on the percentile scale, busier than roughly three-quarters of its past year. That’s the number worth planning around. Everything else on the resort behaved close to script: a Halloween party quieted Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios stayed heavy, and EPCOT idled in the moderate middle. Sunday was, mostly, a routine late-September day. But Animal Kingdom quietly outran what the model expected of it.

Park by park

Start with Animal Kingdom, because that’s where guests would have felt the squeeze. The headliners did the heavy lifting: Kilimanjaro Safaris climbed to a 50-minute average — roughly two and a half times its usual load — and Avatar Flight of Passage sat near 80 minutes for much of the day. Expedition Everest ran a 40-minute average when it was running at all (more on that below). Even the deep cuts moved: Wildlife Express Train, normally a walk-on, held near 10 minutes. A 21-minute median still means comfortable touring by most standards, but the spread between headliners and everything else was wider than a typical Sunday, and the safari line was the pinch point.

Magic Kingdom was the mirror image, and predictably so. With Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party taking over the park at 6:00 PM, the gates effectively closed to day guests at that hour — and fewer people buy a day ticket for a park they know shuts early. The result was a 10.9-minute median, more than a quarter below baseline and a very light 2/10. Peak came early, around 11 AM at 15 minutes, then the park drained through the afternoon as party guests filtered in and day guests filtered out. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure sat near 10 minutes, though that owes as much to an afternoon closure as to demand.

Hollywood Studios stayed genuinely busy — a 37.9-minute median, a touch above its already-high baseline, good for a 7/10. Noon was the crush, with the median hitting 50 minutes as the midday wave landed before Fantasmic! and extended evening hours gave resort guests a reason to linger. EPCOT was the calmest choice at a 5/10 and a 16-minute median, with Food & Wine crowds behaving the way festival crowds usually do: happy to queue for a food booth, less so for a ride. The 11 AM peak of 25 minutes faded fast once the eating started.

Downtime report

Expedition Everest had a rough day for a park that was leaning on it. The coaster was offline twice — 85 minutes in the early morning, then another 95 minutes from 3:10 to 4:45 PM — which meant its 40-minute posted waits were compressed into narrow open windows, sending more pressure onto Kilimanjaro Safaris and Flight of Passage. Over at Magic Kingdom, the afternoon was messier still: Big Thunder Mountain went down for over three hours starting at 3 PM, with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (125 minutes) and Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor (140 minutes) offline in the same window. On a light party day the lost capacity barely registered in wait times, but for guests trying to squeeze a full morning in before the 6 PM clear-out, losing three Frontierland-adjacent options at once stung. EPCOT’s Frozen Ever After also stuttered through three separate stops.

Today’s forecast

For Monday, September 28, the engine calls Magic Kingdom the park to avoid at a 6/10 (about a 23-minute median) as it snaps back from party-suppressed Sunday — early entry for resort guests will front-load the morning, so rope-drop hard or wait until evening. Hollywood Studios sits at a 5/10 (around 38 minutes) and Animal Kingdom at a 5/10 (about 24 minutes), both easing off Sunday’s highs. EPCOT is the best bet at a 4/10 (roughly 28 minutes), with Food & Wine adding foot traffic but not much queue pressure — hit Frozen and Test Track early, then graze the booths. Weather is a non-factor: partly cloudy, a high near 85°F, no rain in the forecast.

One honest note on the scorecard: the engine nailed Hollywood Studios on the nose and got within a level on Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, but it called Animal Kingdom a 6 when it finished an 8 — a two-level miss, and the biggest wait error of the day.
