Not one absorbed Big Thunder’s displaced riders — Space Mountain and Seven Dwarfs, the two closest substitutes for a family thrill coaster, dropped the most. That’s the opposite of redistribution. Now, honesty check: was that decline caused by Big Thunder, or was early 2025 just softer than early 2024 across the board? We ran all four parks as controls. February 2025 waits were down 23% at EPCOT, 20% at Hollywood Studios, and 13% at Animal Kingdom versus 2024 — a park-system-wide cooldown that had nothing to do with any single ride. Buzz’s own Tomorrowland neighbors — Space Mountain, the PeopleMover, Astro Orbiter — didn’t tighten up to swallow its former guests. They loosened, tracking the normal late-summer slide from July peak toward the September lull. This case is confounded by seasonality in the other direction (crowds fall naturally as school resumes), but the direction is unmistakable: closing a popular ride did not raise the wait at a single comparable attraction. Even the ride most similar to Buzz in ride type and location — the Tomorrowland Speedway — moved half a minute. So: suppression, or redistribution? Across three closures, the answer is consistent, and it’s neither of the two things guests usually assume. Conventional wisdom says a closed headliner “pushes crowds onto everything else,” making the rest of the park miserable. The data flatly rejects that. Not once did a comparable attraction’s wait rise to absorb a closed ride’s demand — not Guardians when Test Track was down, not Space Mountain when Big Thunder was down, not the PeopleMover when Buzz was down. What actually happens is closer to quiet dispersal. The demand a headliner carries is remarkably self-contained. When the ride is running, it concentrates a huge, specific slice of guest interest — a fifth of an entire park’s queue burden, in Test Track’s case. When it’s gone, that slice doesn’t reroute to the next coaster; it dissolves into the parts of the day that don’t generate a posted wait — World Showcase, shopping, table-service meals, shows, a shorter day, a park hop, or simply a trip booked for a different week. Because those outlets have effectively unlimited capacity, they never show up as a longer line anywhere. That also reframes the “does it suppress attendance” question. We measure waits, not turnstiles, so we can’t count heads directly. But the fact that Test Track could reappear as the busiest line in the park without lowering a single neighbor tells you the demand it serves is genuinely additive — people organize a visit around riding it. We can measure within-park effects cleanly but can’t directly observe park-hopping or guests choosing a different park entirely, so the “where did the demand go” conclusion is inferred from the absence of spillover, not from tracking individuals. The year-over-year Big Thunder comparison is confounded by a WDW-wide attendance softening in early 2025, and the Buzz comparison is confounded by normal late-summer seasonality — which is exactly why we lean hardest on the Test Track reopening, where the reversal logic controls for those factors.
