The Parks

Sunday, August 9, was the day Hollywood Studios forgot it was August. The park landed a 3 out of 10 on the crowd scale with a median wait of 28 minutes, three full levels below its own 30-day baseline of roughly 6 out of 10. No other park at Walt Disney World moved that far off its own norm all day. In peak summer, with Florida swamped by families, that kind of gap is the difference between a miserable slog and a walk-on Tower of Terror.

Meanwhile the calendar lied to everyone. Halloween decor is already creeping into Disneyland Resort, and Halloween Time officially lands August 21 and runs through October 31. Across the country, Magic Kingdom threw its first Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, and TouringPlans already has wait time data from opening night. The early read: crowds showed up ready to trick or treat, and lines moved about how you’d expect for a party still finding its rhythm in its first outing of the season.

Not every park story this week was about magic. Disney is relocating guests from Boulder Ridge Villas at Wilderness Lodge after a water service malfunction that began Saturday afternoon and dragged into Sunday. It’s the resort’s second failure in two months, which is the kind of pattern that stops being bad luck and starts being a maintenance conversation. And over at Disney’s Grand Californian, the flagship room reimagining is drawing sharp criticism, a notable stumble for an Imagineering team that has otherwise been quietly nailing hotel refreshes for years.

The Shows

Universal Studios Hollywood is bringing Obsession’s Nikki into Halloween Horror Nights, pulling the victim of the One Wish Willow’s curse straight from Curry Barker’s horror hit into the streets of the event. It’s a sharp choice for a crowd that already knows the source material and wants to be startled by something familiar.

Down in Orlando, Universal Studios Florida has finished track installation on Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, with the final pieces now connecting the load station in New York to the coaster’s tallest element near CityWalk. The ride opens next year, and the track completion means Universal’s next big swing at Disney’s theme park dominance is now visibly real steel instead of just concept art.

The Business

Disney’s CFO Hugh Johnston spent part of a recent call needling the competition, and however clumsy the delivery, the underlying claim holds up: in 2026, Disney’s parks make money while Universal explains why theirs don’t. This is the current scoreboard, and it is interesting to watch how loudly Disney keeps saying it out loud as Universal’s Epic Universe and now Hollywood Drift try to close the gap.

The Details

Halloween merchandise has fully taken over Downtown Disney and Disneyland Park. World of Disney has new fall arrivals, and the Emporium just stocked a Flounder Loungefly crossbody bag, which proves that the Halloween rollout includes both candy corn and skeletons as well as whatever The Little Mermaid tie-in someone dreamed up in a planning meeting eight months ago.

Food followed the same script. New Halloween snacks showed up on Disney World menus this week, part of the usual seasonal menu churn Disney runs across its restaurants, resorts, and Disney Springs. And for Star Wars collectors, a new set of Batuu souvenirs has landed that’s being described, accurately, as wallet-crying territory.

None of this is subtle. Halloween arrived weeks before the calendar agreed to it, and Disney’s retail and dining teams didn’t wait around for permission.
