EPCOT Ran Two Levels Above Its Own Normal on Friday — While Its Marquee Ride Sat Idle Most of the Afternoon

EPCOT was the park that broke pattern on Friday, July 31. It landed at a 5/10 against a park that usually drifts around a 3, with a median wait near 19 minutes — roughly a quarter above its own 30-day baseline. That’s the kind of gap that actually changes how a day feels on the ground: World Showcase and Future World both had real lines instead of the walk-on-to-short-wait rhythm EPCOT regulars are used to in midsummer. And it happened on a day when Frozen Ever After, the pavilion’s headliner, was down for the better part of the afternoon.

Start with EPCOT, because it’s the one that moved. The park peaked early — 8 AM, with a 30-minute median — which points straight at early theme park entry. Eligible resort guests poured in at rope drop, hit Frozen, Remy, and Test Track hard, and the front-loaded demand never fully cleared. Then at 12:19 PM, Frozen Ever After went down and stayed down until 4:52 PM, nearly four and a half hours through the busiest window of the day. That pushed guests onto neighbors: The Seas with Nemo & Friends and Living with the Land both ran around 10 minutes against a typical 5 — modest in absolute terms, but a clear sign of demand looking for somewhere to go.

Animal Kingdom quietly ran warm too, up about 22% over its baseline to a median just under 25 minutes. It peaked at 11 AM around 45 minutes, the usual morning surge on Pandora and Everest before the heat thins the walkways. Comfortable touring still, but firmer than the park’s summer norm.

Hollywood Studios sat right where it belongs — a 5/10, median 34 minutes, essentially flat against its baseline. The noon peak hit 50 minutes, which is standard midday Studios. The wrinkle was Toy Story Mania, offline from 10:32 AM to 12:30 PM. Losing an all-ages indoor headliner during a hot late morning sends families next door, and Toy Story Land’s remaining rides absorbed that pressure right as the park hit its ceiling.

Magic Kingdom, despite the highest percentile read of the four at 6/10, actually posted the lowest median wait — about 14 minutes, a touch under its own norm. The late 8 PM peak (20 minutes) tells the story: a park that stayed easy to tour by day and only firmed up after dark.

Downtime Report

Friday was a rough one for ride availability. Frozen Ever After’s afternoon-long closure was the headline, but Magic Kingdom took repeated hits: Haunted Mansion was offline about two hours midday, Space Mountain went down for an 80-minute stretch after 7:50 PM, and Country Bear Musical Jamboree lost nearly two hours through the dinner window. A brief rain band between 12:43 and 1:30 PM triggered weather-protocol closures on three outdoor attractions — Big Thunder, the Main Street Railroad, and EPCOT’s Journey of Water — which is a short, self-limiting event, not a string of mechanical failures. Winnie the Pooh, meanwhile, cycled in and out of service three times in the early afternoon, never long enough to strand anyone but enough to frustrate anyone counting on it.

Our engine calls today a fairly even three-way at the top: Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Magic Kingdom all at 6/10, with expected medians of 39, 28, and 22 minutes respectively. EPCOT is the outlier the other way at 4/10 and about 28 minutes — and it’s the best park to tour today. Studios is the one to avoid, with the highest expected wait of the group. A quick honesty note: yesterday’s forecast nailed Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, missed EPCOT by a level, and overcooked Hollywood Studios by two (we called a 7, it came in a 5).

Weather is a summer-standard 91°F high with clouds and only single-digit rain chances through the afternoon — warm, but not the kind of system that reshapes a day. With summer travel keeping the whole resort above its slow-season floor, the play is clean: ride EPCOT’s early-entry window, then let the afternoon breathe while the other three parks carry the crowd.
