Animal Kingdom Ran the Busiest Board at Disney World on Monday — the Park Guests Usually Skip

Flip the usual summer script. On Monday, July 13, Animal Kingdom — typically the calmest of the four parks on a weekday — posted the highest percentile crowd level on property, landing at a 7/10. That’s busier than roughly 65% of its own past year, and it’s the park most guests pencil in as a half-day. A 25-minute median doesn’t sound punishing on paper, but for Animal Kingdom it’s a 25% jump over its 30-day norm, and the animal trails felt it. If you built Monday around AK expecting to breeze through, you got a slower morning than the calendar promised.

The heat played its part — a high of 92.8°F and 80% humidity pushed everyone toward the two coolest, wettest attractions in the park. But the crowd itself was real, and the ordering was the story: expected quietest, actual busiest.

Animal Kingdom (7/10). The surge showed up early. Peak hit at 11 AM with a 45-minute median, and two attractions carried the load. Kilimanjaro Safaris climbed to 40 minutes, double its usual, as guests chased the shaded, breezy ride before midday heat set in. The genuine oddity was Wildlife Express Train — a five-minute walk-on most days — sitting at 30 minutes. When the little steam train to Rafiki’s Planet Watch draws a half-hour line, the park is full. That’s not a ride people wait for; it’s overflow.

EPCOT (4/10). Waits climbed 24% over baseline to an 18.6-minute median, pushing EPCOT two levels above its normal footing — notable for a park that usually idles at a 3. But guests didn’t get an easy day, because both marquee rides went offline in the afternoon and never fully recovered the evening. More on that below. Even Figment doubled to 10 minutes, a sign the World Celebration crowd had nowhere gentler to funnel.

Magic Kingdom (6/10). The median actually dipped slightly to 14.4 minutes, comfortable by MK standards, but the shape of the day was unusual: peak came at 8 PM, not midday. Two things stack here — an afternoon rain band flattened the midday rush, and Disney After Hours early entry at 7 PM loaded the evening. Waits never got heavy, topping out around 20 minutes, so the back half of the day was the time to ride.

Hollywood Studios (5/10). Steady and unremarkable, a 33.6-minute median just under its 30-day average. The 11 AM peak of 45 minutes was standard rope-drop compression. Rise of the Resistance was the sore spot — down in the morning, then again for over three hours in the evening — which kept its standby line jumpy all day.

A rain band between 4:03 and 5:38 PM triggered weather-protocol closures across eight outdoor attractions at Magic Kingdom, including Big Thunder, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and both Railroad stations. Indoor rides absorbed the crowd for that 90-minute window, and it’s a clean read on why MK’s midday softened.

The harder losses were mechanical and all-day. EPCOT took the worst of it: Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind closed at 3:50 PM and never reopened, and Test Track was down nearly five hours through the evening — both headliners gone at once. Over at Animal Kingdom, Na’vi River Journey was offline from before 8 AM until past 6 PM, effectively an all-day closure, while Expedition Everest sat out four afternoon hours. Magic Kingdom’s Dumbo also closed at 6:38 PM and stayed dark for the night. If you had EPCOT or AK on the plan, your must-do list shrank without warning.

The engine calls for Animal Kingdom at 7/10 (range 3-8), the park to avoid, with waits near 30 minutes. Yesterday it predicted AK at a 4 and got a 7 — that was a clear miss, and we’re not repeating it; the summer-family pressure at AK is real and today’s forecast reflects it. EPCOT is the best play at 2/10 (range 1-5), the calmest board on property, expected around 25 minutes at the busiest rides. Hollywood Studios sits at 5/10 (range 1-8, ~37 min) and Magic Kingdom at 5/10 (range 3-8, ~21 min). Expect another hot, partly cloudy day topping 92°F with scattered afternoon storm chances near 35–52% — plan indoor rides for the 2–5 PM window. Eligible resort guests have early entry everywhere, so rope-drop AK first if you must do it, then bail before the 11 AM crush.
