Hollywood Studios Hit the Ceiling on Friday — a 10/10 With Rise of the Resistance at Nearly Two Hours

Hollywood Studios ran at a 10/10 on Friday, August 7 — three full crowd levels above its own 30-day norm and busier than roughly 95% of every day it’s logged in the past year. A 45-minute median wait is heavy by any measure, but the number that tells the real day is Rise of the Resistance sitting at 115 minutes, more than double its typical posting. This is peak summer travel with no relief valve: every family that skipped Magic Kingdom because of the Halloween party had to land somewhere, and Studios took the brunt.

Weather wasn’t a factor in the crowd math. Friday stayed mostly clear, topping out at 86°F with only a trace of rain — a comfortable summer day that kept everyone in the parks rather than chased into shelter.

Park by Park

Studios is the story, and its peak came early. The park crested at noon with a 57-minute median, meaning by lunchtime the average posted wait across the whole park was pushing an hour. Slinky Dog Dash spent the entire morning at 120 minutes when it was running at all, and even Star Tours — usually a 5-minute walk-on — climbed to 10. When a park’s low-tier filler attractions double, that’s demand with nowhere to hide.

Magic Kingdom told the opposite tale. At a 12.4-minute median, waits landed 17% below the 30-day average — light for a summer Friday. That’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party doing exactly what it does: the park closed to day guests at 6:00 PM, party guests filtered in from 4:00, and plenty of families simply didn’t buy a day ticket knowing the clock would run out. Fantasyland was practically a walk-on — Under the Sea, Dumbo, and Mad Tea Party all sat at 5 minutes, half their usual. The 11:00 AM peak of 20 minutes was as busy as it got.

Animal Kingdom and EPCOT both nudged one level above their own baselines — busy but not remarkable. Animal Kingdom’s 28-minute median peaked at noon, with the safari and headliners carrying the load. EPCOT held at a moderate 16 minutes, its 11:00 AM peak driven by World Showcase not yet open; Spaceship Earth ran to 18 minutes and Figment tripled to 15, both classic climate-controlled parking spots on a hot morning.

Downtime Report

Magic Kingdom guests took the hardest operational hits. Space Mountain was offline from before opening until 6:01 PM — effectively the entire day gone for one of the park’s marquee coasters. On a normal day that would sting; on a party day with a light crowd, most guests just rerouted without long backups. The Barnstormer went down mid-afternoon and never reopened, and “it’s a small world” sat idle through the whole morning until noon.

Over at Studios, the closures bit harder because the park was slammed. Slinky Dog Dash was down through the busiest stretch of the morning, then dropped again after 1:00 PM, pushing already-desperate Toy Story Land crowds toward Alien Swirling Saucers and the Mania queue. Rise of the Resistance lost nearly three morning hours before coming back to that 115-minute line — a brutal combination of downtime and demand.

The engine calls Studios a 9/10 today with a 50-minute median wait — the park to avoid unless you’re committed to a rope-drop-and-Lightning-Lane strategy. Get to a headliner before 9:30 AM or plan on standing. Animal Kingdom comes in at 7/10 (29 minutes), Magic Kingdom at 6/10 (23 minutes) now that the party is over and full hours return, and EPCOT is the best play at 5/10 with a 29-minute median — the calmest of the four and your smart move for a lower-stress day.

Honesty check on yesterday’s forecast: the engine underestimated across the board, missing Studios by four levels (called a 6, got a 10) and Magic Kingdom by three. It nailed the best-and-avoid calls but badly under-read raw summer demand.
