Hollywood Studios’ Headliners Spent the Morning in the Shop on Sunday

If you walked into Hollywood Studios at rope drop on Sunday, August 2, you found a Toy Story Land with almost nothing running. Slinky Dog Dash, Alien Swirling Saucers, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway were all offline through the first two-plus hours of the day. That’s a rough hand for the park with the highest wait-time floor on property. It also shaped everything about how HS’s numbers landed: a 6/10 crowd level built almost entirely on a compressed midday rush once the rides finally came back.

The weather stayed workable — mostly cloudy, high near 88°F, and just under half an inch of rain that mostly held off until a brief evening band. Not the story. The story was mechanical, and it was concentrated in one park.

Park by Park

Animal Kingdom is where the day quietly moved. Waits ran about a fifth above its own 30-day average, landing at a 24-minute median and a 4/10. That’s still comfortable touring — you’re rarely eating more than a half-hour anywhere — but it’s a real bump, and it peaked early at 11 AM (40-minute median) before easing. Summer families spreading out across the resort will do that, and AK absorbs it well. Flight of Passage took a 43-minute mid-morning outage right in that peak window, which only tightened the squeeze on Pandora.

Hollywood Studios posted a 6/10, but the median wait actually finished slightly below its 30-day norm at 34 minutes. Read that carefully: the crowd level reflects a percentile ranking, while the raw wait was dragged down by hours of headliners sitting idle. The noon peak (55-minute median) is where the morning’s backed-up demand all landed at once. If you had a Slinky or Rise reservation and flexibility, the back half of the afternoon was far calmer than that midday wall.

Magic Kingdom ran light — a 13.8-minute median, a touch under its baseline, good for a 4/10. It peaked at 11 AM around 20 minutes and stayed easy. The outliers were charmingly minor: Prince Charming Regal Carrousel and, over at Animal Kingdom, the Wildlife Express Train both doubled to 10-minute waits. When your headline anomalies are a carousel and a train, the park was calm.

EPCOT was the quietest ticket of the day at a 2/10, roughly in line with its norm. Living with the Land actually ran below its usual wait, and outside of Test Track’s morning outage, guests moved freely. This is the classic summer EPCOT play: World Showcase eats the foot traffic, and the queues never build.

Downtime Report

The day belonged to Hollywood Studios’ maintenance crews. Slinky Dog Dash was down from 8:31 to 11:16 AM, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster from 8:54 to 11:15, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway went offline at 8:36 and didn’t return until 3:36 PM — nearly seven hours. Rise of the Resistance added a 68-minute midday gap on top. Worst of all, Alien Swirling Saucers opened, closed at 9:25 AM, and never came back — a full-day loss. For anyone building a morning around Toy Story Land, that’s most of the land gone, and it’s why the surviving rides saw waits pile up by noon.

Elsewhere was routine. A short evening rain band around 6:53–7:17 PM triggered weather-protocol closures on Test Track, Slinky Dog Dash, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train — three outdoor rides pausing together, all back quickly once it passed. Magic Kingdom saw scattered short stops (Tiana’s, Space Mountain, Peter Pan) that never meaningfully dented touring.

Today’s Forecast — Monday, August 3

The engine calls Hollywood Studios the park to avoid at a 6/10, around a 39-minute median — busier than roughly half the past year. Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom both land at 5/10 (about 26 and 22 minutes), and EPCOT is your best bet at a 4/10 near 28 minutes. Early theme park entry is available today for eligible resort guests across all four parks, so expect the pre-10 AM window to move fast wherever you start.

Yesterday’s forecast was honest-to-goodness solid: three parks landed within one level, Animal Kingdom hit exactly, and both the best-park and avoid-park calls were correct. My play today — open at EPCOT for that soft 4/10, save Hollywood Studios for late afternoon or evening, and hope its headliners hold up better than they did Sunday.
