Magic Kingdom Ran Nearly Empty on Party Tuesday — Under 10-Minute Median Waits Through Midday

Magic Kingdom posted a median wait of under 10 minutes on Tuesday, August 11 — a 1/10 day that landed a full two levels below the park’s own 30-day norm. On a peak-summer weekday, that is the kind of number you usually only see in a shoulder-season January. Two forces stacked up to produce it: Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party closed the park to day guests at 6:00 PM, and the local school year started the same morning. Fewer families bought a day ticket for a park they knew would close early, and the ones who came walked onto almost everything.

The heat was real but not the story — 96°F and mostly clear, with a brief afternoon storm cell rolling through around 3:20. Crowds, not clouds, set the tone.

Start with Magic Kingdom, because it moved the furthest. At a 9.7-minute median, the park barely registered a peak — waits crept to just 15 minutes around noon before flattening. Party-day suppression is a known pattern, but the first day of Orange County and Polk County schools sharpened it: local annual passholders who normally pad weekday counts were doing car lines and homework instead. Pirates of the Caribbean, Astro Orbiter, the Speedway, and Barnstormer all sat at a flat 5-minute walk-on. This was a day to ride your favorites twice.

Hollywood Studios was the busy park, running an 8/10 with a 38-minute median — actually a hair under its monthly average, but still busier than roughly three-quarters of its past year. It peaked hard and early, hitting 55 minutes at 11:00 AM as rope-drop crowds funneled into Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge before the afternoon thinned things out. Even the usually-ignored Star Tours doubled to a 10-minute wait, a sign the whole park was carrying load. This is where displaced Magic Kingdom guests, and everyone else, ended up.

EPCOT and Animal Kingdom both ran quiet. EPCOT sat at a 2/10 with waits a touch above its low baseline, peaking at 25 minutes late morning; Spaceship Earth and Living with the Land were 5-minute walk-ons all day. Animal Kingdom came in lightest against its own norm, a 3/10 with the median down more than 40% versus its 30-day average. Kilimanjaro Safaris, normally a 20-minute wait, cleared guests at a 5-minute pace — the cooler, cloudier afternoon likely nudged the safari’s usual midday queue down.

Downtime Report

A storm cell between 3:20 and 5:03 PM triggered weather-protocol closures across six outdoor attractions at once — Expedition Everest, Test Track, Slinky Dog Dash, Journey of Water, and the two Animal Kingdom walking trails all paused together. That’s a real disruption, not a string of mechanical failures, and it pushed guests toward indoor rides for about 90 minutes before things reopened.

Separately, Slinky Dog Dash had a rough evening: after the weather pause, it went down again from 6:13 to 9:08 PM, nearly three hours offline during prime touring at Toy Story Land. Over at Magic Kingdom, Haunted Mansion was unavailable for just over two hours in the afternoon, and Space Mountain closed for roughly 90 minutes midday — though with the park this empty, the sting was minimal. Both stretches of Walt Disney World Railroad also went down together for over an hour after lunch.

Yesterday’s engine call needs an honest accounting: it pegged Hollywood Studios at a 3/10 and the park delivered an 8. That’s a five-level miss, driven by the model underestimating how much summer weekday demand would pile into the Studios. The other three parks landed within a level. Today’s forecast has Hollywood Studios back on top at a 6/10 with an expected 40-minute median — the park to save for late day or skip if you can. Magic Kingdom rebounds to a 6/10 (around 22 minutes) now that the party is behind it and normal hours return. Animal Kingdom sits at a comfortable 3/10 near 21 minutes, and EPCOT is your best bet at a 1/10 — the calmest ticket on property. Note that Hollywood Studios hosts a Disney After Hours event tonight, but that’s a late-night add-on and won’t touch daytime waits.
