Hollywood Studios Ran Three Levels Hot While Its Headliner Sat Idle Most of the Day

Hollywood Studios posted a 42.5-minute median on Thursday — a 7/10 day against a park that usually loafs around a 4/10. That’s the sharpest departure from a park’s own norm anywhere on property, and it happened despite Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run being unavailable from before rope drop until mid-afternoon. When a park runs that hot with a headliner offline, the pressure lands on everything else. Four active school breaks and the park’s extended evening hours kept demand high all day, and the Falcon’s absence simply funneled that crowd onto its neighbors.

The weather gave guests no reason to slow down — 89 degrees, clear skies, not a drop of rain. Warm and dry is exactly the backdrop that keeps queues full.

Where the Pressure Landed

At Hollywood Studios, the morning peaked hard: an 11 AM median of 55 minutes. With Smugglers Run down from 8:35 AM straight through 3:43 PM — most of the operating day — the standby line everywhere else swelled. When the Falcon did come back online, it immediately ran 45 minutes, well above its usual 25. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway also dropped for about 50 minutes in the afternoon, and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster went down for an hour-plus in the evening, so the park spent the whole day one headliner short of a full roster.

EPCOT was the other standout, landing well above its own baseline at an 18.4-minute median. Food & Wine is running, but the queues tell a different story than the booths — Soarin’ doubled to a 60-minute wait, The Seas with Nemo climbed to 20, and Gran Fiesta Tour, normally a walk-on, held a 15-minute line. Those aren’t festival-foodie numbers; those are genuine ride-demand numbers. Test Track added to the strain by going down for most of the late morning, right as the 11 AM peak built to a 30-minute median park-wide.

Animal Kingdom ran busy too, up more than a third over its 30-day average to 27 minutes. Expedition Everest carried the morning story: down for two-plus hours after opening, then running a 40-minute wait once it recovered — double its typical. The park peaked at noon with a 40-minute median before easing off.

Magic Kingdom was the quiet corner, and that’s entirely by design. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party closed the park to day guests at 6 PM, and the 10.6-minute median — nearly 30% below its own norm — reflects the usual party-day suppression. Fewer day tickets sell when the gates close early. You could feel it in Fantasyland, where Dumbo, Small World, Astro Orbiter and the Speedway all sat at a flat 5-minute walk-on. The only real climb came at 6 PM, as party guests streamed in.

A Day of Scattered Breakdowns

Beyond the Falcon, Magic Kingdom guests had the roughest luck with reliability. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train went down twice — a two-hour afternoon stretch and again in the evening — while Space Mountain dropped for 90 minutes starting at 4:17 PM and Pirates of the Caribbean closed twice, including right at the 6:30 party transition. None of this was weather; skies were clear all day. It was simply an unusually heavy run of independent mechanical hiccups, and with Magic Kingdom already running light, the displaced guests had plenty of short lines to absorb them. Over at EPCOT, Frozen Ever After and Remy’s each lost about an hour, pushing more guests toward Soarin’ and the Seas during their outages.

Today’s Outlook: Thursday’s Pattern Mostly Holds

Our engine missed badly on yesterday’s calls — it pegged Animal Kingdom at a 2 (it came in at 6) and undersold EPCOT by three levels. Today it leans the other way, and the drivers line up: Hollywood Studios is the avoid, forecast at 8/10 with waits around 44 minutes, so get there for early entry and knock out a headliner before the 11 AM wall. EPCOT is also an 8/10, near 35 minutes, with Food & Wine and festival crowds layering on — rope-drop Soarin’ or Test Track first. Animal Kingdom sits at a 7/10 around 30 minutes. And Magic Kingdom is today’s clear winner at 2/10, roughly 18 minutes — but only if you’re out before the 6 PM party closure. If you want a relaxed day of short lines, that’s where to point the car this morning.

Worth knowing: the Walt Disney World Railroad is closed for refurbishment, so don’t build a transit plan around it.

Yesterday proved how fast a day turns when a headliner drops at rope drop and doesn’t come back for seven hours.
