Hollywood Studios Ran Four Levels Above Its Own Normal on a Holiday-Weekend Friday

Hollywood Studios posted a 43.8-minute median on Friday, October 9 — a 9/10 day that sat a full four levels above where this park usually lands. For a park that typically hums along around a 4/10, that’s the kind of jump that turns a casual afternoon into a standing-in-line afternoon. The Indigenous Peoples’ Day long weekend is already loading the resort with arrivals, Dallas-Fort Worth school districts are on fall break, and a youth soccer tournament is funneling athlete families through the gates. Friday was the front edge of all of it, and three of the four parks felt it.

Where the crowds actually landed

Studios carried the weight. Waits peaked at an 11 AM median of 60 minutes — classic rope-drop pileup, made worse by Slinky Dog Dash being unavailable for the entire morning (more on that below). With the land’s headliner out, demand pooled onto everything else, and the park never really exhaled. Weather helped keep people moving indoors: a humid 90-degree day with scattered clouds and a third of an inch of rain pushed guests toward air conditioning, not away from the park.

Animal Kingdom was the quieter surprise. A 27.7-minute median is nearly double its 30-day baseline, landing it two levels above its own norm. Avatar Flight of Passage ran a 105-minute average — more than double its typical 45 — and Expedition Everest climbed to 45 minutes once it recovered from a morning outage. Kali River Rapids hitting 35 minutes on a 90-degree day isn’t an anomaly; it’s exactly what a hot, busy day does to a soak ride. If you were touring Pandora on Friday, you felt a park that’s usually a walk-on turn into real waits.

EPCOT ran warm too, two levels above normal at a 20-minute median, with Food & Wine crowds thickening World Showcase. The tell was in the usually-sleepy rides: Gran Fiesta Tour and Figment both tripled to 15 minutes, and Nemo doubled to 20. When the cellar-dweller attractions start holding real lines, the whole park is full.

Magic Kingdom was the exception, and the reason is on the calendar. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party closed the park to day guests at 6 PM, and that early cutoff quietly suppresses daytime demand — fewer people buy a day ticket for a park that shuts at dinner. MK settled at an 11.7-minute median, actually below its own baseline, with a gentle noon peak of 20 minutes. Displaced guests had to go somewhere, and the surges at the other three parks are where they went.

The morning outages that shaped the day

The pain was front-loaded. Slinky Dog Dash was offline from park open until noon — nearly four hours — right as Toy Story Land filled up, which is a big part of why Studios peaked so hard at 11 AM. At Magic Kingdom, three heavy hitters stacked up in the same window: Big Thunder Mountain down until 11:14, Haunted Mansion out until 10:23, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train closed for an hour mid-morning. On a party day MK could absorb it, but rope-drop guests lost their first three tries.

EPCOT’s story was persistence: Frozen Ever After broke down three separate times across the afternoon, each lasting about an hour, while Test Track went down for over two and a half hours starting at 6 PM and Guardians dropped for 40 minutes mid-afternoon. Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom also lost its morning. None of these were weather closures — the rain was light and scattered — so guests simply had to roll with a rotating cast of unavailable rides.

Today’s forecast: a packed Saturday

Full honesty first: our engine badly underplayed Friday, calling Magic Kingdom a 1/10 (it came in at 6) and Animal Kingdom a 5 (it hit 9). The best-park and avoid-park calls landed, but the levels did not. On a holiday weekend, the model’s instinct to predict calm is exactly the instinct to distrust.

For Saturday, October 10, expect a genuinely busy resort. The engine calls Hollywood Studios a 9/10 (around a 47-minute wait) — the park to avoid, with Animal Kingdom at 9/10 (about 35 minutes) and EPCOT at 8/10 (about 37 minutes). Magic Kingdom is your best bet at 8/10 (roughly a 25-minute wait) — note the party suppression lifts today, so it won’t run as light as Friday. Highs near 88 with a low rain chance won’t thin anything out. Use early entry if you’re eligible, hit Slinky Dog Dash or Flight of Passage first, and treat the afternoon as indoor time. There is no quiet park today, only a less-crowded one.

Special events reshape the entire resort, and Friday’s split — a party-suppressed Magic Kingdom while three parks ran hot — is exactly the pattern Lightning Brain’s event-aware modeling is built to catch, so you know where to tour while the crowds pile up elsewhere.
