EPCOT Ran Hot and Magic Kingdom Emptied Out as the Halloween Party Took Over Tuesday

Food & Wine did the heavy lifting Tuesday, September 22. EPCOT pushed to a 5/10 against a park that normally idles around a 3 — two full levels above its own baseline — while Magic Kingdom drained to the opposite extreme, sitting two levels below its usual mark. Both moves trace back to one calendar entry: Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. When the party takes over Magic Kingdom, the rest of the resort inherits the guests, and Tuesday’s numbers show exactly where they landed.

Weather was a non-factor in the crowd math — 91 degrees, mostly clear, a trace of rain. Warm and sticky, but nothing that moved touring patterns. The story was where people chose to spend a party day.

Where the Guests Went

Start with EPCOT, because that’s where the swing was biggest. An 18-minute median with a 10 a.m. peak (30 minutes) tells you festival-goers arrived early, hit a ride or two, and settled into the food booths. The Seas with Nemo & Friends doubled to a 10-minute wait — modest in absolute terms, but a clear sign of overflow demand filling in the smaller attractions while Food & Wine drew the crowd. For most guests this still read as a comfortable day; you just felt more company than EPCOT usually offers.

Animal Kingdom ran hotter than its raw crowd level suggests. A 21.5-minute median is a 43% jump over its 30-day average, landing the park a level above where it normally sits. Expedition Everest carried a 25-minute wait before its afternoon troubles began — well above its typical 15 — and the 11 a.m. peak of 40 minutes shows guests front-loading the morning before the heat and the ride problems set in.

Hollywood Studios held steady at a 5/10, a hair above its own norm. A 32.5-minute median with a noon peak of 45 minutes is a normal midday build, and the reopened Magic of Disney Animation added a little indoor draw. The one number worth flagging: Alien Swirling Saucers doubled to a 40-minute wait, and there’s a clean reason for it in the downtime data (more on that below).

Then there’s Magic Kingdom, running at a 9-minute median — its emptiest posture in a year. This is textbook party-day suppression. The park closes to day guests at 6 p.m., fewer people buy day tickets, and the ones who came walked onto nearly everything. Space Mountain at 10 minutes, Big Thunder and Tiana’s both at 15, Pirates at 5 — headliners with no line. The 4 p.m. peak barely touched 10 minutes. If you had a Magic Kingdom day ticket Tuesday, you had the run of the place.

The Downtime That Shaped the Day

Two closures defined Tuesday. Expedition Everest went down at 1:40 p.m., limped back for an hour, then closed again at 2:47 p.m. and never reopened — offline for the entire evening. With Animal Kingdom’s marquee thrill ride gone for the back half of the day, guests had few high-capacity alternatives, and the park’s morning-heavy wait pattern makes more sense in that light.

Over at Magic Kingdom, Peter Pan’s Flight was offline from 8:43 a.m. to 3:14 p.m. — more than six hours, most of the operating day. On a packed day that’s a crisis; on a near-empty party day it barely registered, since Fantasyland had plenty of walk-on capacity to absorb it. Hollywood Studios felt a sharper pinch: Slinky Dog Dash went down at 7:55 p.m. for an hour, and Alien Swirling Saucers’ doubled wait is the displaced demand showing up next door. EPCOT churned through afternoon and evening stops on Test Track, Guardians, Frozen Ever After, and Journey of Water, though most were short enough that the festival crowd never really noticed.

Today’s Forecast: Wednesday, September 23

The party’s over — literally — so Wednesday resets to a genuinely light day across the board. Our engine calls EPCOT the best park at a 2/10 (around 25-minute waits), with Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom both at a 3/10 (roughly 19 and 21 minutes), and Hollywood Studios the one to avoid at a 3/10 with 34-minute waits. Food & Wine keeps EPCOT lively but the queues stay short, and it’s a Good-To-Go Day, so Disney is nudging locals in with lighter attendance expected. Watch the afternoon sky — rain chances climb toward 31% between 2 and 5 p.m., so bank your outdoor rides in the morning.

Quick scorecard on yesterday’s engine call: it nailed Magic Kingdom’s 1/10 and got the best-park pick right, but missed on three parks by a single level each and whiffed on the avoid-park. Close, not perfect — and we’ll take the honest miss.
