The Parks

Early closures aren’t going anywhere. Disney has confirmed its theme parks will keep the shortened operating hours that have defined the post-pandemic era, and the compensation mechanism remains the same: pay extra for Disney After Hours. The full 2027 lineup is out, hitting Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT, and tickets that were previously restricted to resort hotel guests during an early window are now open to everyone. Three extra hours, shorter waits, rare character meets, and included snacks make it a good event. This also serves as an admission that the standard park day isn’t getting longer anytime soon.

Over at BoardWalk, change is coming to Crescent Lake. Atlantic Dance Hall is ending regular operations as Hurly-Burly Bar takes its place. BoardWalk nightlife has never been static, and this swap continues that pattern. Whether Hurly-Burly becomes a worthy successor or just fills a gap remains the open question.

runDisney runners have a new resource to work with. The 2026 Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend guide is live, covering Expo hours and race-day logistics. The Expo runs 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Day One, with complimentary transportation running from 8:15 a.m., giving out-of-towners a clear window to plan around before the actual running starts.

Trip reports keep proving that Walt Disney World doesn’t require a week-long commitment. A 36-hour visit from Nashville, splitting time between Saratoga Springs, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, and EPCOT, came in under $1,000 total including flights, lodging, food, and tickets. Minimal rain, low waits, and smart use of Lightning Lane and single rider lines make this a useful data point for anyone convinced a quick trip isn’t worth the airfare.

The Shows

HBO has pushed back Season 2 of its Harry Potter series. Production on the first season began at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in mid-2025, with Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout leading the cast into the franchise’s next screen chapter. HBO had already moved the Christmas debut up from its original 2027 target, so the Season 2 delay reads less like trouble and more like a studio managing a production timeline that’s still finding its footing.

On the collectibles side, Halloween season is delivering exactly what it should. AMC Theatres is rolling out Nightmare Before Christmas popcorn buckets and other movie theater merchandise tied to Jack Skellington, giving the Tim Burton classic another retail moment three decades removed from its original release.

Marvel Games and PlayStation’s tag-team fighter Tōkon: Fighting Souls, released in August, is getting a comic tie-in. D23 sat down with the author of Marvel Tōkon: First Strike #1 to talk about translating the game’s reimagined character roster and visual style onto the page.

The Business

The headline hire this week is Karandeep Anand, who joins Disney as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, a newly created position, effective October 2. Anand comes from Character.AI, where he was CEO, with earlier stints at Meta and Microsoft. Creating a CTO role from scratch signals Disney wants a single executive owning tech strategy company-wide, rather than scattering it across divisions. Anand’s AI background lines up directly with what Walt Disney World is already testing on the ground.

That test is Gemini AI, Google’s model, now running as an optional beta for vacation planning at Walt Disney World. The tool uses natural language processing to help guests, especially first-timers, navigate the property’s hotel and ticket options. Disney leadership walked through the initiative directly, framing it as a response to how overwhelming the planning process can be for someone who has never parsed the difference between a deluxe resort and a value resort, let alone a park hopper ticket. Anand’s arrival and the Gemini beta are two threads of the same story: Disney is done treating AI as a side experiment and is starting to build infrastructure around it.

Meanwhile, the layoffs keep coming. Disney has reportedly cut staff again ahead of October, the third round in twelve months, following cuts that already hit marketing, corporate functions, ESPN, the film studios, and Disney Entertainment Television. Pixar absorbed the largest share of studio cuts last round, and National Geographic was hit hardest within DET. Names lost included longtime SportsCenter anchor Karl Ravech and NFL analyst Ryan Clark. Disney has declined to comment on the latest round. Three rounds of cuts in a single year while simultaneously creating a new C-suite tech role and rolling out AI planning tools show a company reallocating rather than retreating.

Disney Cruise Line’s business side is moving too. This week’s special offers include a dedicated promotion built around the Disney Adventure, the line’s Singapore-based ship. It’s the first standalone push for that vessel alongside the usual fleet-wide discounts, a signal that Disney is actively working to fill cabins as the ship settles into its Asia sailing pattern. Separately, Disney Cruise Line posted an unprecedented volume of special offers, 141 sail dates with discounts, stretching out to May 2027 and departing from Fort Lauderdale, Galveston, Port Canaveral, San Diego, and Vancouver. The Disney Wonder continues to lead the fleet in deal volume. That many discounted dates that far out suggests demand is not fully covering supply.

The Details

Disney Cruise Line and Make-A-Wish Ireland hosted their first-ever gathering for wish families, bringing more than 30 wish children and their families together during the Disney Dream’s visit to Cork. The afternoon aboard ship was billed as a first of its kind day, part of a broader multi-day “A Disney Wish” experience built around storytelling and the kind of moment these partnerships exist to create.

Disney Publishing is highlighting its latest must-read picks on the Disney Parks Blog, covering new releases, nonfiction, and character-driven stories across age groups, alongside author and illustrator features for readers building out a family library.

And in Orlando’s other theme park corner, Universal’s Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift coaster construction is moving forward, with the project targeting a 2027 opening on the site of the former Hollywood theming at Universal Studios Florida. Universal’s build pace often sets the tempo for what Disney announces next.
