Two months, identical crowds, completely different gambles In July 2025, the midday wait across Walt Disney World’s headliners averaged 31.4 minutes. In December 2025, it averaged 32.1. Statistically, those are the same month. If you only read a crowd calendar’s average, you’d plan them identically. You would be very wrong. In July, the busiest day of the month peaked at a 36.5-minute midday index and the quietest bottomed out at 24 — a swing of 12 minutes. In December, the range ran from 22 minutes to 54. Same average crowd. More than double the volatility. A family that booked a December trip expecting “average” could land on a 22-minute day and cruise, or a 54-minute day and spend the afternoon in queues they never planned for. Average crowd level is the number everyone quotes. It is also the number that hides the thing that actually wrecks trips: predictability. We pulled 19 months of posted wait times to answer a different question than “how busy will it be?” We asked “how much can I trust the forecast?” — and the answer changes dramatically by season. How we measured predictability We analyzed over 30 million posted standby-wait records from January 2025 through July 2026, sampled every five minutes across all four parks. For each headliner attraction, we computed its average midday wait (11 a.m.–4 p.m., when the parks are fullest) for every operating day. Then, within each month, we measured how much those daily averages bounced around using the coefficient of variation — the standard deviation divided by the mean, expressed as a percentage. The coefficient of variation (CV) is the key metric here because it separates volatility from raw crowd level. A 15% CV means daily crowds cluster tightly around the average and the calendar is trustworthy. A 38% CV means the “average” is a fiction you’ll rarely actually experience. The predictability calendar Here is every calendar month ranked by how unpredictable its headliner waits were, pooling both years of data where available. Note how similar the average waits are — and how wildly the volatility diverges. Average waits range from just 45 to 53 minutes across the entire year — a difference most guests would never notice. But volatility nearly doubles, from July’s tight 20.7% to December’s chaotic 37.8%. Two months can carry identical crowd forecasts and deliver completely different levels of planning risk. The most reassuring part: the pattern replicated across both years we measured. January’s volatility read 30.9% in 2025 and 28.9% in 2026. July read 20.6% and 20.7%. These aren’t random flukes — they’re structural features of the Disney calendar, driven by school schedules, holidays, and events that recur every year. Why “just avoid weekends” doesn’t save you The obvious guess is that volatility is a weekend effect — Saturdays spike, weekdays calm down, and the average smears the two together. We tested that directly by stripping out each month’s day-of-week pattern and measuring how much variation was left over. It turns out day of week explains almost none of it. Across the year, between 80% and 97% of daily wait variation was unexplained by whether it was a Tuesday or a Saturday. In December, 95% of the swing had nothing to do with the day of week. The “weekends are busier” rule of thumb captures maybe a tenth of the actual day-to-day variation. What really moves crowds is the calendar position — how close you are to a holiday, a school break, or a special event. A random Tuesday in late December is far busier and less predictable than a Saturday in early December. The weekday label tells you almost nothing. December: the month that’s chaotic and predictable at the same time December earns its worst-in-class volatility score, but the reason is fascinating. It isn’t randomly unpredictable — it’s two entirely different months wearing one name. Then Christmas week detonated. December 29 hit a 54-minute midday index, 2.4 times the 22.3 recorded on December 2. Averaging those together produces a “December” number that describes almost no actual day in December. So December’s lesson isn’t “avoid December.” It’s “the monthly average is useless here — you must plan by the week.” Early December is a hidden gem. The last ten days are the hardest planning environment Disney offers all year, and no crowd calendar built on monthly averages will warn you which one you booked. Spring break shows the same trap April repeats the pattern in miniature. In April 2026, the first ten days ran hot — a 34-to-45-minute midday index as spring-break and Easter travel peaked. Then, around April 12, crowds fell off a cliff to the mid-20s and stayed there for the rest of the month. Two Aprils in one, and a monthly average that lands in a no-man’s-land neither half ever visits. The same cliff shows up around holiday weekends in January (Marathon Weekend and MLK) and February (Presidents’ week) — brief, sharp spikes bolted onto otherwise calm months, which is exactly what drives their moderate volatility scores. The consistently plannable seasons If your priority is a trip that behaves the way the forecast says it will — regardless of whether crowds are high or low — the data points clearly to late spring and summer. June and July posted the year’s tightest volatility (21.3% and 20.7%), and March close behind (23.4%). Summer’s reputation is “hot and crowded,” and the crowds are real. But they’re consistent. July’s daily index stayed in a narrow 24-to-36 band all month. When school is out nationwide, attendance settles into a steady, predictable hum with no holiday cliffs to blindside you. You may wait 30 minutes for a headliner, but you’ll wait roughly 30 minutes every day, which means every plan you make actually holds up. March offers a similar steadiness with milder weather, as long as you dodge the specific Easter and spring-break weeks. Not all parks are equally trustworthy Volatility also varies by park. Its heavy reliance on outdoor attractions and shorter operating hours makes it the most exposed to Florida’s afternoon thunderstorms and seasonal swings — a rainstorm can clear or compress crowds in a way that’s far less visible in the enclosed rides of Magic Kingdom. If you have one non-negotiable Animal Kingdom day, build in the most schedule slack there. What this means for your trip Read volatility, not just the average. A month’s average crowd level tells you how long the lines are. Its volatility tells you whether your plan will survive contact with reality. High-volatility months demand backup plans and flexible touring; low-volatility months reward a fixed itinerary. In December and April, plan by the week, not the month. Early December and mid-to-late April are among the calmest, most predictable windows of the year. The holiday and spring-break weeks bolted onto them are the least. The monthly label averages the two into a number that describes neither. Don’t lean on “avoid weekends” as your main strategy. Day of week explains under 20% of daily crowd variation. Calendar position — proximity to holidays and school breaks — is what actually moves the needle. For maximum reliability, target June, July, or non-holiday weeks of March. Crowds may be moderate to high, but they’re steady, and a steady crowd is a plannable one. Give Animal Kingdom the most slack. It’s the park most likely to deviate from its forecast on any given day. Limitations A few honest caveats. Our richest volatility comparisons cover full 2025; for months where only one year of data was available (September through December), the figures reflect a single year and could shift as more data accumulates — though the January-through-July months, which we measured twice, replicated almost exactly. We measured posted standby waits, which Disney sets and which can differ from the actual time you stand in line. Our analysis focuses on midday headliner waits; early-morning and late-night patterns, and low-wait attractions, may behave differently. Finally, volatility measures how much crowds bounce around, not why — weather, ride downtime, and special events all contribute, and we can’t cleanly separate their individual effects from wait data alone. The takeaway The crowd calendar isn’t wrong, exactly — it’s just answering the wrong question. It tells you the average. But two months with identical averages, July and December, delivered wildly different trips: one a steady, plannable 12-minute range, the other a 32-minute free-for-all. The number that predicts whether your vacation goes to plan isn’t how high the crowds are. It’s how much they move. Pick a low-volatility window, or plan a high-volatility one week by week, and you’ll spend a lot less of your trip discovering that the “average” day never actually showed up.
