EPCOT Slipped Past Animal Kingdom on Tuesday — and Then Its Evening Fell Apart

The park order flipped on Tuesday. Instead of the usual Hollywood Studios > Magic Kingdom > Animal Kingdom > EPCOT stack, EPCOT jumped a spot and finished ahead of Animal Kingdom, landing at a 4/10 while Animal Kingdom eased down to a 6/10 on lighter-than-normal waits. It’s a small reshuffle, but a real one — EPCOT ran about 12% above its 30-day median while Animal Kingdom sat roughly 6% below its own. The two parks essentially traded their expected positions for the day.

Weather was a non-factor in the crowd math: 95 degrees, mostly clear, and just under half an inch of rain that never organized into a closure event. This was a hot, dry summer Tuesday, and the parks behaved like it.

Magic Kingdom quietly ran the resort’s busiest percentile

Here’s the number that surprises: Magic Kingdom posted an 8/10 — busier than roughly three-quarters of its past year — on a median wait of just 16.3 minutes. That’s the low-baseline math at work. Sixteen minutes doesn’t feel heavy walking the park, but for Magic Kingdom, it’s a genuinely full day. The telling detail is the peak: waits didn’t top out until 7 PM, a full-day build rather than a morning rush. And the pressure showed up in the spinners, of all places. Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Astro Orbiter, Dumbo, and Mad Tea Party all ran double their typical waits. When the low-capacity carnival rides start posting 15 and 20 minutes, the park is absorbing more bodies than the headliners alone can move. Under the Sea climbed to a 25-minute average — partly demand, partly a rough morning that knocked it offline for an hour after opening.

Hollywood Studios held its expected top spot at a 7/10, median 37 minutes, and did most of its damage early — an 11 AM peak near 60 minutes. Animal Kingdom shared that same 11 AM crest at 45 minutes before settling into a comfortable afternoon; at 18.7 minutes median, it was the easiest of the two headliner parks to tour once the morning wave passed.

EPCOT’s evening was the day’s rough patch

EPCOT’s crowd level was modest, but its operational afternoon was anything but. Test Track went down twice, including a 107-minute stretch through midday. Then the evening unraveled: Spaceship Earth was offline for two hours starting at 4:50 PM, Figment closed twice across the dinner window, Frozen Ever After lost an hour after 7 PM, and Nemo dropped out mid-afternoon. For a guest arriving after 4 PM hoping to knock out the classics, half the marquee list was unavailable at once — which likely pushed some of that traffic toward World Showcase food and the Guardians/Remy queues that stayed up.

Over at Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain had a rough day at both ends, down two hours in the morning and another 86 minutes starting at 8:22 PM. Both Walt Disney World Railroad stations went down together mid-afternoon for an hour. At Hollywood Studios, Slinky Dog Dash opened late after a 105-minute morning closure, and Rise of the Resistance stumbled twice, including an hour offline in the mid-afternoon — the kind of thing that sends Toy Story Land waits climbing while guests wait out the reset.

Today’s outlook: Wednesday, July 22

The engine calls Hollywood Studios the park to avoid at a 6/10 (expect around 40-minute waits), with Magic Kingdom right behind at a 6/10 near 22 minutes. Both get early entry today, so the smart play is to be tapped in at rope drop and clear a headliner before the 11 AM wall we saw yesterday. Animal Kingdom lands at a 4/10 (about 25 minutes), and EPCOT is the best park today at a 2/10 — the calmest board on property, roughly 25-minute waits and busier than only about 16% of its past year. If yesterday’s evening breakdowns spooked you, note the forecast is about crowds, not reliability; go early and hit the classics before any afternoon hiccups.

One scheduling note: Disney After Hours runs at Hollywood Studios tonight. That’s a late-night ticketed event starting at regular close — it does nothing to the daytime crowds, so plan your Studios morning normally. On yesterday’s scorecard, the engine nailed EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom, but missed Magic Kingdom by two levels — it forecast a 6 and MK delivered an 8. Fair miss to own; that late-building 7 PM peak was steeper than the model expected.
