Magic Kingdom Led the Resort Monday — Then a Midday Storm Emptied the Outdoor Rides

Magic Kingdom finished Monday as the busiest of the four parks, an 8/10 day that put it ahead of Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and EPCOT. That’s a reordering worth noting: the summer norm runs Hollywood Studios on top, with Magic Kingdom a step behind. Yesterday flipped it. A 17.7-minute median doesn’t sound punishing, and it isn’t for a seasoned tourer — but it landed roughly two crowd levels above where Magic Kingdom usually sits, and the 2 PM peak pushed medians to 30 minutes right as the sky was falling apart.

Which brings us to the day’s real disruption. A rain band rolled through between roughly 12:49 and 2:58 PM and triggered weather-protocol closures across 15 outdoor attractions at once — spanning Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and EPCOT. This wasn’t a string of mechanical failures. It was one storm, and it reshaped the entire midday.

Park by Park

Magic Kingdom (8/10). The headliner park carried the most demand and took the hardest weather hit. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Big Thunder, Jungle Cruise, both Railroad stations, Astro Orbiter, Tomorrowland Speedway, and Tiana’s all shut for the storm window, funneling guests indoors. You can see it in the outliers: Pirates of the Caribbean averaged 25 minutes, well above its 15-minute norm, as an indoor boat ride absorbing displaced crowds. Even the low-capacity spinners felt it — Magic Carpets of Aladdin held a 15-minute average, triple its usual, and Dumbo and Mad Tea Party both doubled.

Hollywood Studios (7/10). The everyday heavyweight ran right at its 30-day median, near 35 minutes, with an 11 AM peak of 45. Nothing surprising here — Studios being busy is the climate, not the story. What’s notable is that it didn’t lead. With most of its marquee attractions indoors or covered, the storm barely dented touring, and it quietly ceded the top spot to Magic Kingdom.

Animal Kingdom (7/10). The standout mover. A 26.7-minute median ran about a third above its 30-day average — a real jump for this park. Expedition Everest, Kali River Rapids, and both walking trails went down in the storm cluster, and the 1 PM peak of 40 minutes tells you demand was concentrated before the rain arrived. Summer crowds are clearly treating Animal Kingdom as more than a half-day.

EPCOT (6/10). The calmest park, and the best play of the day at a 16.3-minute median. Test Track and Journey of Water both closed for weather, and Spaceship Earth had a separate afternoon outage (more below). Journey Into Imagination With Figment crept to a 15-minute average, triple its usual — a sign guests were hunting dry, air-conditioned rides while the band passed through.

What Broke

The storm did most of the damage, and it’s best read as a single event: for about two hours in the early afternoon, outdoor touring at three parks essentially stopped, and indoor rides swallowed the overflow. That’s why Pirates and Figment spiked exactly when they did.

Two closures stand apart from the weather. Pirates of the Caribbean went down at 3:57 PM and stayed offline until 7:57 PM — a full four hours through prime evening touring, a genuine loss given how much daytime demand it had just absorbed. And EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth was unavailable from 4:12 to 6:05 PM, pulling the park’s most reliable people-eater off the board for two hours of the dinner rush.

Today’s Outlook

Our engine under-called every park yesterday — Magic Kingdom landed two levels high, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios three. Summer holds more heat than the model wanted to give it, and we’re owning that. Here’s today’s read:

• Hollywood Studios — 7/10, ~42 min. Avoid it if you can. Yesterday’s 42-minute wait and last week’s same-day pace both point up, and eligible resort guests get early entry today. Rope-drop or go late.
• Animal Kingdom — 6/10, ~28 min. A 93°F high and steady demand keep it moderate. Knock out Everest and Flight of Passage early.
• Magic Kingdom — 6/10, ~22 min. Cooling off from yesterday’s peak but still busy. Morning is your friend before the afternoon heat builds.
• EPCOT — 4/10, ~29 min. The best park today. Zero feeder markets on break and the lowest projected crowd of the four make it the smart base.

Watch the afternoon: temperatures near 93°F with up to a 29% storm chance means a repeat of yesterday’s midday shutdown is very possible. Front-load outdoor rides before 1 PM and keep an indoor backup ready.
